Another Ways for Teachers to Make Money
- on June 07, 2017
I started out writing an article called 5 Ways For Teachers
To Make A Little Extra Money, but after I had written that article I realized I
actually knew more than five ways for teachers to make a little extra money. So
here is the sequel, Five More Ways For Teachers To Make A Little Extra Money.
Working over the
summer
One of the rewards of being a teacher is getting long summer
holidays. But unless you're very good at organizing your money, those summer
holidays can sometimes end up being a bit lean. One way you can avoid this is
to go out and get a summer job.
There are many things you can do over the summer holidays in
order to earn extra money. Going back to one of my favorites - you could always
teach English at summer school.
Thousands of children go to the UK, the US, New Zealand and,
Australia over the summer holidays in order to learn English. They usually stay
in residential summer camps or in home stay situations. If you have an extra
bedroom you could host one of the students in your home. And you could also get
a job teaching English at one of the schools.
If you don't want to commit that amount of time to a summer
job, you can always offer to supervise the students on evening and weekend
activities. A few years ago I found a position where I was paid to accompany
groups of students around the UK for weekend excursions. An added benefit was
that I got to explore many interesting and historical places in the UK, all
while getting paid.
Perhaps you don't want to spend your summer teaching? How
about escorting a walking tour in Spain? A Cycling tour in Kazakhstan? The
summer is the height of the tourist season for Europeans, you could easily see
more of the world as a tour guide. The pay isn't great, but the side benefits
are amazing.
Get an Evening Job
Teaching is a full-time job that must be done during normal
working hours. But this won't stop you from getting an evening job, or perhaps
even a weekend job. I've always taught English night classes for extra money,
but I've known other teachers who have worked in restaurants or worked in bars.
At one time, just after I moved hemispheres for the fourth
time, I did consider getting a job in a bar. I wasn't considering this for the
money, primarily. I thought it would be a great way to meet new people and get
paid at the same time.
Multilevel marketing
This isn't something that I've ever tried personally, but
I've known a number of teachers who have. Multilevel marketing is a way of
making money through selling products to people you know, and also by
recruiting people into the same business.
It takes a certain personality to be successful at
multilevel marketing, from what I've seen. If you're not good at selling things
to people, you should perhaps consider one of the other money earning options
I've already mentioned.
Some of the multilevel marketing opportunities I've known
teachers get involved in are Avon, Amway and Nutralife.
Internet Marketing
Internet marketing is a fancy term for a phenomenon that has
sprung up since the invention of the Internet. In order to become an Internet
marketer you need an Internet connection, a computer, and some commitment.
The one thing about Internet marketing that makes it so
attractive to me as a teacher is that it fits my lifestyle. I can choose when
to work, where to work, and how many hours I want to work. Additionally, I
don't have to be a great salesperson, or become a great salesperson.
To find information on Internet marketing you can do a
search in Google. There is a mind-boggling amount of information available on
the Internet on this very subject.
Move Your Teaching
Career Abroad
I briefly touched on this in my previous article 5 Ways For
Teachers To Make A Little Extra Money, and I would like to expand on it here.
I discovered through research that I could earn more money
for doing the same job if I moved overseas. In my current teaching position I
get:
* a higher salary than what I earned previously
* an extra 10% to contribute to my retirement fund
* full medical insurance
* an accommodation allowance,
* a yearly bonus.
Additionally, the cost of living is lower where I now live
and the school year is 16 days shorter than in any country I've worked in
previously. So I teach less, earn more and it costs me less to live. It almost
sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? Well, it is true and it's a life I'm
living.
If you're interested in earning more money for the same
amount of work you are doing now, then you should definitely look into teaching
overseas.
Best and Easy Ways to Teach Your Students
- on May 28, 2017
It's well known that children don't stay focused for a long
period of time especially if something excludes them and isn't interesting. Why
not try finding an easier way to teach children without losing their attention?
Children like interactive, colorful and exciting activities.
How do you think you could incorporate these things into a lesson?
Mathematics lessons
Youngsters will find this subject incredibly boring. Many
teachers use color to highlight answers or objects to show differences in
numbers. Math bingo is a well-known game played in the classroom and it works
well if there are many students. Make sure to offer a prize for the winner so
that you keep their attention.
If you want to teach students multiplication you can either
make them act as the numbers or you can create a game that requires them to
shout the answer. You could write a sum on the board and whoever has the piece
of paper with the correct answer on it has to get up and stick it to the board.
Science Lessons
Science is the subject where you can experiment and question
why a certain thing happens in the world. Children like to see reactions. The
best way to start this off is by doing the volcano reaction. Make your students
construct an interesting volcano with trees and a realistic landscape. This
will be fun for them to watch when they see the result of the experiment.
When it comes to lessons involving the physical reactions,
such as impacts and crashes, you can use boxes with elastic. Make your students
create force on a wheeled box using wind energy or fire energy in order to get
it to move. Then explain to them why the reaction happened.
Theory Lessons
English, art theory, science theory, and history are not the
most exciting subjects for most students. Most students' minds will drift away.
When teaching these subjects it is ideal to use as much imagery as possible and
get your students to be creative. Start off by making them create a story that
is relevant to a particular time era or situation. They learn quickly if they
experience it or are able to visualize it. You may need a lot of stationery so
it might be best to visit a cash and carry wholesaler to get the
stationery in bulk.
It's important to captivate a young mind in these subjects
so that they are prepared for the future.
J&E Cash 'n Carry is one of South Africa's biggest
wholesalers in the following categories of products: Cosmetics, Groceries,
Sweets, Personal Care, Household, Health, Beauty, Baby, Hardware, Electric
& Stationery. We supply traders only, and offer the highest standards of
service, the cheapest deals, and the best buying experience.
Teachers, Use Green Ballpen. . . Why?
- on May 26, 2017
Just in time for the opening of classes, teachers nationwide are encouraged to use green ballpen when checking student's work. Here's why.
Francis Kenneth Hernandez, CAR-Ph.D., administrator of TeacherPH Facebook Group, posted a very useful and motivational tip.
It reads:
According to a color psychology website, green is the color of balance, harmony and growth.
It reads:
"When checking student's work, avoid using red ink. Instead, use green.Since May 31, teachers who have read his post vowed to ditch ballpens with red ink. Some even shared photos of green ballpens they bought in preparation for the school opening on June 13.
The psychology behind it is simple.
Green is the color of hope which suggests that there can be room for improvement rather than made their work bloody which gave a notion that what they did are errors which can demoralize them.
The use of green would stop the stigma and would surely motivate learners to do better next time."
According to a color psychology website, green is the color of balance, harmony and growth.
"This is a color that has a strong sense of right or wrong, inviting good judgment. It sees both sides of the equation, weighs them up, and then usually takes the moral stand in making appropriate decisions."Green is also "an emotionally positive color, giving us the ability to love and nurture ourselves and others unconditionally," the website posted.
Overcoming Stress As A Teacher
- on May 23, 2017
When I first started teaching, it was exciting. I loved
education and working with young people. I was very idealistic and as corny as
it may sound, I thought in my own way I was changing the world.
Through the years, my initial excitement turned to stress
and anxiety. Teaching was an overwhelming responsibility. The stress of dealing
with students, papers, lesson plans, report cards, principals, supervisors,
co-workers, and parents would weigh down on me and I would doubt why I even
became a teacher. Don't get me wrong, I never stopped believing in the value
and importance of education but my passion for the work would erode sometimes.
Stress is common in new teachers as well as veteran teachers
but this doesn't have to lead to burn out and leaving the profession. Here are
a few tips that may help.
Organize: As a new teacher, you must be organized.
Paperwork will quickly pile up as you embark upon the school year. It was not
unusual for me to have piles of papers on my desk. These papers would include
homework, staff memos, attendance sheets and other things. You may also receive
a lot of staff handbooks from your school. Get a hold of paperwork right away.
Organizing papers in a file cabinet, file crates, or any other way that is
suitable for you. The point is to get organized, not how you do it.
When it comes to student work, try to get it back to your
students as quickly as you can. As you give assignments and tests and students
turn them in, you could easily have over fifty papers on your desk waiting to
be graded! It is extremely stressful trying to read and grade numerous papers
at once. You may wonder how you will get through them all and still get to your
lesson planning and other teaching responsibilities. Get these papers back to
your students as soon as possible and this will reduce your stress level significantly.
Planning: Know how you are going to run your classroom
before the first day of school. Know the physical layout you will have, the
types of assignments you will give, what behavior you expect from your
students, how you will communicate with parents and how you will handle student
discipline. One of my favorite sayings about life is "Without a vision,
the people perish." In teaching, if you have a vision about what you
expect of yourself, your classroom, and your students, this will help you feel
more relaxed and in control. This is really all stress is, the feeling that you
are not in control.
Expect the Unexpected: Unexpected things WILL happen
when teaching. This is a given. You may plan a lesson you think is absolutely
wonderful and it falls flat. You may have a great book you want the class to
read only to discover the majority of your students are not reading or grade
level. You may have been told at teacher orientation that the principals and
supervisors will be there to support you but other commitments keep them from
being available to you. Parents may be unsupportive. These things cause you a
lot of stress and can make you think "What am I doing here?"
Unanticipated problems can wreck havoc on your confidence as a teacher and even
lower your self esteem. This doesn't have to be the case. Every problem should
be looked on as just challenges to overcome. Challenges only test us and can
even make us stronger.
Reflect: I
have always been a believer in self-reflection. If you are having difficulty in
teaching, I think it is important to look at yourself, to see if there is
anything you can do better or differently. Reflecting does NOT mean beating
yourself up if things are not going the way you want them to in the classroom.
Reflection is just looking at things objectively without guilt or blame. If
your students are just not
